It is always best to measure up for curtains with your pole or track already in place otherwise there will be too many unknowns to get accurate results.
Use a metal tape! they are more rigid and will give a more accurate measurement. For the best performance, your curtain track or pole should be positioned approximately 15cm (6”) higher than the window, and be wider than your window by 15-20cm (6-8”) either side.
If you’re using a curtain track, measure its full length. For curtain poles measure the length of the pole only, do not include the finials (decorative pieces on the end).
Curtains (length)
Decide where your curtains will end. Sill length curtains should finish either 1.5cm (1/2”) above the windowsill or 15cm (6”) below the sill to exclude lights and draughts effectively. To prevent wear on the hems, floor length curtains should ideally finish 1.5cm (1/2”) above the floor.
Windowsills and floors are not always level, so measure at 2 or 3 points to ensure the best fit. Measuring at either end and in the middle should provide accurate results.
To measure the ‘drop’ of your curtains for pencil pleat, measure from the top of the track glider to your chosen end point (e.g. windowsill, floor). For curtain poles, measure from the bottom of the pole rings to where you want the curtain to finish.
Measuring guide for Roman Blinds Use a metal tape for increased accuracy. Take your measurements in centimetres and in 3 difference places to ensure accuracy, decide if you would like your blind fitted inside or outside of the recess (window frame) Inside Recess - Width Measure across the width in 3 places and take the smallest measurement. Make sure there are no obstructions that would get in the way of the blind such as tiles or phone sockets. reduce the width by a further 1 cm to ensure that the blind hangs freely and does not drag against the side of the window. This is the measurements of the width to be given on ordering. Height Measure the height in 3 places and take the smallest measurements. if you have chosen to have a pom pom trim deduct 1.5 cm from the drop to allow space for them. Outside Recess - Width Decide how far you want the fabric to overlap on the right and left side of the window. I recommend between 5 cm and 10 cm on each side. Height Decide how far you want the fabric to overlap top and bottom. I recommend between 5 cm and 10 cm at the top, this will ensure that when pulled up, the blind does not obscure the top of the window and gives enough fabric to stop any sunlight from coming in.
Curtain Alterations Headings Grommets - Take your measurement from the top of the pole to 1 inch above the floor for a full curtain or to your desired length.
